So you think you can find the right franchise — on your own?

Searching for a franchise takes a great deal of effort and buying the right franchise is by no means easy. If one thinks it’s easy to find a quality franchise on their own, they may be in for an undesired outcome.

As in real estate, new home buyers will often regret their purchase after realizing that there are more ideal homes for sale. For example;  in better neighborhoods, with lower property taxes, more square footage, larger properties, better schools etc. Of course many will never admit it and will convince themselves that they are content with their new home. At least with a home, what you see is what you get. However, in franchising there are many important variables that are difficult to see without the proper knowledge and experience.

No one wants to buy a franchise and realize that there are other franchises that would have been better and/or more suitable after the fact. One might be stuck with a franchise that may be good but not great. For the exact same investment or less, one could have purchased a more ideal and successful franchise. No one wants to watch other franchise systems take off, while their business and franchisor remain stagnant in comparison. There is no worse feeling than when someone realizes that they have made a poor purchase decision, especially one as significant as a franchise. This can happen to the best of people, as most do not know which franchises are on the rise or possess a track record of success. Equally as important, which franchises are truly most compatible with their unique personality and goals.

What a franchise buyer sees and what an industry expert sees are often two very different pictures. The average franchise buyer will spend 2-4 months looking at franchise opportunities before making a decision. Prospective franchise owners do not have the privilege of watching franchisors develop over the course of many years. Whereas a franchise expert possesses insider information from speaking with other insiders and spending years evaluating franchise opportunities. A qualified franchise expert knows of almost every franchise opportunity available and more importantly about the genuinely successful and progressive franchises.

It’s astonishing how many people purchase a franchise believing that they have considered every franchise opportunity available. When in fact, they have only reviewed a fraction of the franchise opportunities available. Unfortunaltey some learn of other exceptional franchise opportunities when it’s far too late — when they have already signed a franchise agreement. Whether they admit it or not, deep down a large percentage or franchisees will regret their choice. Not to say that they made a bad choice by any means, however, they could have made a better choice and ultimately been happier – if they only knew more. That’s where a franchise expert can be a valuable asset to a prospective franchisee.
